Federal Push to Kill Cleaner Cars & Trucks Standards Threatens New Mexico’s Health and Savings

New Mexico is taking bold steps to protect our air, our health, and our future. With the adoption of the Clean Cars and Trucks standards in 2024—our state created a roadmap for cleaner transportation, healthier communities, and real savings for drivers and families.

But now, those protections are under threat from our own federal government.

Cleaner Air, Healthier People

Gas and diesel cars, trucks, and buses are major sources of harmful air toxins. This pollution can cause asthma, lung disease, and other health severe problems. It’s worse in places near busy roads or commercial warehouses.

With these standards, more electric cars and cleaner trucks will be on the road. This means:

  • Fewer kids getting asthma attacks
  • Less sickness and fewer hospital visits
  • Cleaner air for everyone

Saving Money with Cleaner Cars

Electric cars cost less to own and operate. You don’t need to buy expensive gas and they don’t break down as much or require regular maintenance like oil changes. Over time, drivers can save thousands of dollars.

New Mexico’s clean cars and trucks standards also help make electric cars easier to find and buy in-state. That means:

  • More choices when you shop for a new car
  • Lower fuel and repair costs
  • More money in your pocket

A Federal Setback—and a Legal Fight

Despite these benefits, the federal government recently revoked the state’s authority to enforce these standards—standards New Mexico adopted to fight air pollution and climate change. This move could delay or weaken our ability to enforce cleaner car and truck standards, resulting in unchecked tailpipe pollution hurting our families and communities.

In response, New Mexico has joined the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition to find pathways to bring more electric cars to New Mexico and reduce harmful pollution and joined 10 other states in a lawsuit to restore those protections and defend our right to cleaner air. We’re so thankful to New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham for joining the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition and to New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez for fighting for our right to breathe cleaner air!
